Patron Conduct Policy

All patrons of Mercer University Libraries have the right to expect a safe and peaceful environment for research and study. Patrons are expected to abide by all rules outlined in the Mercer University Code of Conduct and extensions reflected in the University Libraries policy below.

All patrons of Mercer University Libraries, especially current students and faculty are expected to be courteous to library employees and comply with any other directions employees deem necessary to maintain the safety and security of all patrons. Failure to comply with staff requests, directions, or instructions may result in loss of privileges, including removal from the building and a referral to the Mercer University Dean of Students. 

When utilizing library facilities, conduct violations include (but are not limited to):
 
  • Behaving in a manner that interferes with normal use of library facilities and resources. 
  • Disruptive and exceedingly loud use of electronic devices (cellphones, computers, tablets, etc.).
  • Engaging in argumentative or disrespectful behavior towards library staff. 
  • Harassing library patrons or staff. 
  • Tempering or interfering with emergency mechanisms (fire alarms, elevator alarms, emergency exits, etc.) in non-emergency situations. 
  • Engaging in sexual activity.
  • Being in unauthorized areas of Mercer University Library facilities. 
  • Violating group study room policies and/or 24/7 floor access policies. 
  • Defacing and vandalism of public restrooms. 
  • Using library furniture for purposes other than their intended use (lying on tables, standing on chairs, arranging furniture for sleep, etc.).
  • Riding any wheeled vehicle (skateboards, bikes, e-scooters, etc.) within the buildings. This does not include mobility aids. Wheeled vehicles must be stored so as not to impede the movement of or cause injury to others. 

When utilizing library materials / resources, conduct violations include (but are not limited to):

  • Mutilating, defacing or misusing library materials, equipment, or property. 
  • Removing or attempting to remove library materials or other property without checking them out or without proper authorization.
  • Concealing or otherwise restricting access to materials in the library for the exclusive use of an individual, individuals, or groups.

Prompt and appropriate actions will be taken for violation of conduct policies that are in violation of the University Code of Conduct, Student Code of Conduct, or Library Code of Conduct.
