Scope and Contents

This collection contains mostly Art Department meeting minutes, items concerning on-campus gallery exhibits, and course information including syllabi. Also included are Samuel Hutto’s curriculum vitae, and items pertaining to professional development, and his work. More miscellaneous items include reports, committee meeting minutes, and administrative items such as information on the old email system, Pines, and the first computerized student record system, SIS.

The Godard Collection contains the personal papers of William Thomas Godard and George Delma Godard. The collection consists of sermon notes, correspondence, essays, and other materials belonging to both men. Series 1 contains of papers from William Thomas Godard. Series 2 contains of papers from George Delma Godard.

The Griffin B. Bell Collection contains correspondence, speeches, publications, legal documents, official papers, photographs, audio-visual materials, plaques, and posters.

The Douglas Steeples Collection includes Civil War documents gifted to the Mercer University History Department by Douglas Steeples and Chinese chopsticks given to Steeples from a Chinese diplomat and visiting scholar.

The collection primarily consists of music programs collected by Collins during his lifetime. These programs include Collins’ performances and those that he attended at Tift College and other institutions (mainly churches). The programs are in chronological order. The collection also contains Collins’ college degrees, plaques, a scrapbook, and a framed item from Tift College.

Scope and Contents The Merritt Papers contain clippings that Merritt collected from The Christian Index during the years 1915, 1917, 1920, 1921, 1922, 1923, and 1924. The 1915 and 1917 clippings are related to B.Y.P.U. events and news. The 1920-24 clippings are mainly “Our Georgia Baptist Sunday Schools” pages from the time that Merritt was a field director for the Sunday School Department. Every effort has been made to retain the original order of the papers. Titles were taken from Wesberry’s original folders. Sermons were arranged according to the numbering system used by Wesberry, and titles of folders are approximations assigned by processor.

The William Jones Carswell Collection contains three boxes of sermon notes, two of which are filed in letter-sized folders and one of which is filed in the original envelopes; one box of published books, slides, and photographs; and a final box of research notes on 4ʺ × 6ʺ cards.

Scope and Contents The Spencer B. King, Sr., Collection contains seven scrapbooks from moments in Rev. King’s life. The seven scrapbooks are in poor condition.. Scrapbook 1 contains clippings from the Armstrong Hotel register, the New York Journal, and William J. Bryan’s visit to Rome. The Carswell Family Collection scrapbook contains biographies, histories, and genealogies of the Carswell, Janes, and Hobbs families. There are maps, letters, and brief stories in the scrapbook.
