Scope and Contents

The collection primarily consists of music programs collected by Collins during his lifetime. These programs include Collins’ performances and those that he attended at Tift College and other institutions (mainly churches). The programs are in chronological order. The collection also contains Collins’ college degrees, plaques, a scrapbook, and a framed item from Tift College.

Biographical / Historical

Roy Lee “Lee” Collins was a white vocal professor at Tift College. He was born on November 30, 1917, in Detroit, Michigan and died on March 23, 2018, in Forsyth, Georgia. Collins spent his childhood in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, before joining the National Guard in 1940. He enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1942, where he served until 1945. Following Collins’s discharge from the Coast Guard, he earned both a Bachelors and Masters of Arts degree from Columbia University in New York City. While in New York, Collins met his future wife, Cordelia.

Following Collins’s graduation from Columbia’s Teacher’s College in 1955, he joined the faculty of Bessie Tift College in Forsyth, Georgia, where he taught for 28 years. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Forsyth.
