Scope and Contents
The Spencer B. King, Sr., Collection contains seven scrapbooks from moments in Rev. King’s life. The seven scrapbooks are in poor condition..
Scrapbook 1 contains clippings from the Armstrong Hotel register, the New York Journal, and William J. Bryan’s visit to Rome.
Scrapbook 2 contains clippings of sermons, didactic essays, news stories, poetry, fiction, and biographical material about Arch Cree.
Scrapbook 3 contains clippings from Georgia Baptist Convention reports.
Scrapbook 4 contains sermons from C. H. Spurgeon, Parkes Cadman, R. A. Torrey, Len G. Broughton, E. C. Dargan, John E. White, W. W. Hamilton, Lyman Abbott, T. DeWitt Talmage, Warren A. Chandler, and many others.
Scrapbook 5 contains summaries of Georgia Baptist Convention reports, The Christian Index articles, and other church related clippings.
Scrapbook 6 contains Atlanta Constitution transcripts and summaries of 80 revival sermons preached by Billy Sunday.
Scrapbook 7 contains names of items of the Georgia Baptist Convention Executive Committee, King’s Tract clippings, Banner Unions in the State, State Aims, Important Dates, Associational Division by Regions, Map of Associations and Regions, Regional Aims, and miscellaneous materials.

Biographical / Historical
Spencer Bidwell King, Sr., was born on January 2, 1880. He attended the Hearn Academy in Cave Spring, Georgia, for two years. He was ordained to the ministry in 1907. Rev. King was the pastor of several churches in and near Rome, Georgia and served in various capacities for the Georgia Baptist Convention in Atlanta from 1912-1919. He served as pastor of Blakely Baptist Church in Early County from 1921-1926 and 1931-1945. Rev. King was the Superintendent of State Missions of the Georgia Baptist Convention from 1926-1931. He wrote a book, Georgia: A Mission Field, in 1928. He retired from the ministry and moved to Americus due to his declining health in 1945. Spencer Bidwell King, Sr., died on November 30, 1954, in Americus, Georgia.
Spencer B. King, Sr. was father to Spencer B. King, Jr. (1904-1977) and father-in-law to Caroline Paul King.
