Homer Drake Papers

The Homer Drake Collection documents Drake’s relationship with Mercer University in the last three decades of his life. Jacob Horace Smith, Jr. Papers

The Smith collection contains papers (photocopied) from the years 1872-1875. It includes Smith’s diary (1873-1875), newspaper articles (1873, 1875), correspondence (1874), a commencement address made by Smith at Mercer University (1872), and sermons. The originals are located at First Baptist Church in Rome, Georgia.

James Hines Kilpatrick Papers

The James H. Kilpatrick Collection contains a scrapbook. This was apparently given to his son, William Heard Kilpatrick, upon his death in 1908. Inside are clippings, mostly from The Christian Index, but there are also clippings from the Texas Baptist Herald. There is a barely legible index of these clippings on the inside of the front and back covers. Topics var clippings and include church government, missions, temperance, and both amusing and moralistic anecdotes.

These papers offer information on the general life at Mercer from 1986-1990, which includes the Godsey-GBC Conflict of 1987-1988 sparked by Mercer being named one of the “Top Ten Party Schools” by Playboy magazine. Clippings from various local and state newspapers outline the attacks on and defense of Mercer during those years. The collections also include some artifacts, such as shirts, buttons, and bumper stickers from the time.

Scope and Contents The Kaderly collection was acquired through at least two deposits, one shortly after Kaderly’s death and the other in May 2000.
