Biographical / Historical
Thomas J. Porter was born on March 6, 1913, in Frostburg, Maryland, and graduated high school in Akron, Ohio, before moving to Macon to attend Mercer University in 1932. He played on both the basketball and football teams and earned the A.B. and M.Ed. degrees. His wife, Maryle McClellan, was also a member of the Class of 1936. Porter taught mathematics and coached basketball, track, and football at Lanier High School in Macon. At the time of his death on February 7, 1965, he was the principal of the school.
