Scope and Contents

The Charles L. Whaley Collection contains five boxes of materials produced by or related to Charles Whaley and Lois Linnenkohl Whaley and their lives as missionaries to Japan. The collection also includes yearbooks from Seinan Gakuin University. Most of the items in the second accession are undated and were kept in their original order.

The Douglas Steeples Collection includes Civil War documents gifted to the Mercer University History Department by Douglas Steeples and Chinese chopsticks given to Steeples from a Chinese diplomat and visiting scholar.

Scope and Contents The Eugene S. Mitchell Collection consists mainly of items from Mitchell's education at Mercer University (1857-1860) and correspondence from during and after the American Civil War (1862-1871). Series 1 consists of correspondence, mostly from Mitchell to Chloe Emma Lewis, his future wife. Scope and Contents The Otto Papers contains one binder entitled “The Case of Dr. Francis Robert Otto,” and a notation inside reading, “This copy by hand from Dr. Otto, September 25, 1990.” The binder is organized into sections, all of which deal with a controversial chapel sermon delivered by Dr. Otto (Dean of the Chapel) in 1967. Carpenter Collection contains brief biographical papers, including a magazine sketch of his life, a letter from the President of Mercer University, and a proclamation for a day in his honor.
