Christian Index

This fragile scrapbook contains numerous items in no particular order: printed minutes of an organization, articles by CDM clipped from the Christian Index and Southern Baptist Missionary Journal, handwritten manuscripts on various topics (including sermons or exegetical essays), an associational circular letter, financial records, much poetry, and at least two printed pamphlets.

The Eleanor Fay Allen Cunningham Papers contains one scrapbook (1948-50), one letter from Ms. Cunningham (September 15, 1995), and one loose photograph of Ms. Cunningham (c.1995).

The collection mainly contains McConnell’s sermon notes and outlines from 1856-1929.

The George William Garner Collection contains one large, ornate scrapbook from Mr. Garner. The scrapbook contains several cut-out articles from The Christian Index.

The Jack U. Harwell Collection contains news clippings, articles, office files, correspondence, minutes, and financial statements.

The James H. Kilpatrick Collection contains a scrapbook. This was apparently given to his son, William Heard Kilpatrick, upon his death in 1908. Inside are clippings, mostly from The Christian Index, but there are also clippings from the Texas Baptist Herald. There is a barely legible index of these clippings on the inside of the front and back covers. Topics var clippings and include church government, missions, temperance, and both amusing and moralistic anecdotes.

The Manuscript Collection contains correspondence, essays, journals, notes, receipts, and other documents from multiple creators, arranged in alphabetical order. Some of the letters have transcriptions; a few are photocopies.

The Thomas J. Holmes collection contains correspondence, programs, paperwork, and other publications related to Rev. Holmes’ time at Mercer.
