Biographical / Historical
Jack U. Harwell was born on October 18, 1932, in Mobile, Alabama. He professed his faith in Christ at thirteen years old and earned an undergraduate journalism degree from Samford University in 1953. Harwell was a public relations specialist for the U.S. Army (1953-1956) and the U.S. Air Force (1957) and editor of The Christian Index (21 years) and SBC Today (10 years). He was a leader in the formation of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. He served as Minister of Pastoral Care at the First Baptist Church of Morrow, Georgia, for eleven years. Harwell had two sons, Don and Ron, and was married to Teliea. Dr. Harwell passed away on January 18, 2019, at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
