Edgar L. Morgan Papers
Scope and Contents
The Edgar L. Morgan Papers contain five spiral-bound books of transcripts from Dr. Morgan’s sketches of missionary life in China (originally published in the Owenton, Kentucky, News-Herald); a letter by Carter Morgan describing the collection; and memorials for Edgar L. and Lelah Carter Morgan written by Carter (their son). The collection also contains a folder of supporting documents, including sample articles, business cards, and an obituary of Dr. Morgan. The collection was compiled and arranged into binders by Carter Morgan in 1997.

Biographical / Historical
Edgar L. Morgan was a white man born in Fayette County, Missouri, and later graduated from both Georgetown College and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He was rewarded the honorary doctorate by Georgetown College in 1920. In 1905, he went to China to serve as a missionary and served there for 22 years. While in China, he was the Mandarin editor for the China Baptist Publication Society. His experiences in China were the subject of a series of sketches published in the Owenton, Kentucky, News-Herald in the 1950s. After returning to the United States, he served as a Bible teacher at Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, Texas, and at Columbia Bible College in Columbia, South Carolina. For 15 years prior to World War II, he wrote an annual summary on Chinese affairs for the Encyclopedia Americana. He returned to South Carolina in 1933 and served as a Bible teacher, conference worker, and writer.
Morgan was the father of Edgar Carter Morgan.
