Scope and Contents
The Carter and Agnes Morgan Collection contain materials documenting their missionary life over the course of the twentieth century. They contain a transcript of Edgar L. Morgan’s (Carter’s father) journal chronicling his work in China from 1905-1927; Post Scripts, newsletters written by Carter as he and Agnes served as missionaries in Hawaii, Hong Kong, and the Philippines from 1948-1996; and biographical materials and a diary from Silas Emmet Stephens, Carter’s uncle and a missionary to China. The collection was compiled by Carter Morgan.

Biographical / Historical
Carter and Agnes Morgan were both Southern Baptist Missionaries to Hawaii, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and other locations of the Western Pacific Rim from 1948-1996. They married in 1947 and began their first overseas mission trip in 1948. In 1997, they retired from missionary work and lived in Westminster, South Carolina.
Agnes was born in Piedmont, SC, in 1923 to parents William Thomas and Ernestine Major McMahan. Agnes received her bachelor of arts degree from Columbia Bible College (Columbia, SC) and Furman University (Greenville, SC). Before her appointment as a missionary, her work included: youth director and secretary to Dr. Flournoy Shepperson at the Bible Presbyterian Church, Greenville, SC. She married Carter Morgan in 1947, after which they worked together at the First Baptist Church in Thomasville, NC until they were appointed as Southern Baptist missionaries the following year. In 1947 they were sent to serve in Hawaii, first in Waimea, Kauai (1947-54) and then in Honolulu (1954-55) where she was a student worker. In 1955 they were transferred to Hong Kong, where she served in the Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary (1955-79), taught at Hong Kong Baptist College (1956-58), and worked with Mandarin speaking churches. She studied Mandarin Chinese diligently, with her teacher Mrs. Yueh. For many years, Agnes managed the dining hall at the Laan Tao Camp near Sunset Peak on Laan Tao Island. In 1979, she and Carter were transferred to Baguio City, Philippines where she served as a seminary teacher and worked with a Chinese speaking church. They retired November 1, 1983, and moved to Westminster, SC, after which she was involved in local church activities at Westminster Baptist Church where she was a member. She also worked with students and families at the Chinese Christian Fellowship of Clemson SC. Between 1991 and 1996, she and Carter returned to Hong Kong for a total of four years, to teach at the Hong Kong Baptist Seminary, finally returning to South Carolina in 1996. Agnes died August 29, 2014.
Carter was born in 1913 in Laichow, Shantung, China, to Southern Baptist missionaries. He he grew up in Tsingtao, Shantung, China, and finished school in Westminster, SC. Carter attended Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, Texas, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Georgetown College in Kentucky. He then attended Columbia Bible College in S.C. and received the Master and Doctor of Divinity degrees from the Baptist Bible Institute, now the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, in New Orleans, La. Prior to becoming a missionary, Carter performed Bible conference and retreat work and children's Christian camps from 1933 through 1947. He taught at Williams Jennings Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn., and Clear Creek Baptist School in Pineville, Ky. He married Agnes Iola McMahan in 1947. He then served as pastoral associate at First Baptist Church in Thomasville, N.C. Dr. and Mrs. Morgan were appointed as Southern Baptist missionaries in 1948. He served as pastor and general evangelist in Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii, from 1948 to 1954 and as director of the student center in Honolulu from 1954 to 1955. In 1955 they transferred to Hong Kong, where he served as academic Dean of the Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary from 1955 to 1979. He also served as Dean of the Asia Baptist Graduate Theological Seminary from 1966 to 1982. Both served in many additional capacities while in Hong Kong. Carter was an avid hiker, and took a special interest in support and maintenance of the Laan Tao Mountain Camp in Hong Kong. In 1979, the couple transferred to the Philippines, where he served as a seminary teacher in Baguio City. Dr. and Mrs. Morgan retired on November 1, 1983, and moved to Westminster. There, he filled regular responsibilities at Westminster Baptist Church. He actively taught in the Bible Study for students and families at the Chinese Christian Fellowship of Clemson. Between 1991 and 1996, they returned to Hong Kong for a total of four years, to teach at the Hong Kong Baptist Seminary, finally returning to South Carolina in 1996. Carter died April 05, 2008.
