Scope and Content Note

The William J. Morcock Collection consists of sermons and daily business dealings of the Morcock family. Twelve folders contain sermons and essays written by Morcock, spanning the period 1849-1874. Three folders contain receipts for purchases made by the family between 1851 and 1895. A journal/account book covering 1870-1879, a small collection of correspondence from 1855 to 1863, and some miscellaneous writings of or about other members of the family complete the collection.

Biographical Note

William J. Mor(e)cock was born in Beaufort, South Carolina, on January 13, 1830. He received his early education and training in South Carolina. During this time, he was baptized by Rev. Richard Fuller and joined the Beaufort Baptist Church. He graduated from Brown University in 1851 and Princeton Theological Seminary in 1856.

Morcock returned to South Carolina and established himself as a minister and writer for The Southern Baptist, published in Charleston. During the Civil War, he served as a voluntary missionary to soldiers. After moving to Georgia, he pastored churches in the Monroe County area and taught French at the Monroe Female Academy in 1868 and 1870. In 1877, the Georgia Baptist Convention appointed Morcock as a missionary, and he served in this position until his death on June 5, 1879.
