Biographical / Historical

Dr. Stella Stewart Center graduated from Monroe (Tift) College in 1894 and received further degrees from Peabody College in Nashville, the University of Chicago, and the University of Georgia. She taught and worked in multiple school systems and colleges in Georgia, Mississippi, and New York, including Tift College, Columbia University, and New York University. After retiring to St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1955, she returned to Tift as the reading consultant in 1963. She authored multiple books about reading. She was a member of the National Council of Teachers, the American Association of University Women, the Hugenot Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the First Baptist Church of Forsyth.
