Scope and Contents

The Mallary Scrapbook Collection consists of about 25 unbound pages of clippings related to the Mallary family, five photographs of paintings by Jeanie Dagg (Mrs. Rollin Daniel) Mallary, one Christmas card containing on the cover a photograph of a painting by Mrs. Mallary, and one photograph of Charles Dutton Mallary.

Biographical / Historical

Charles Dutton Mallary was born in West Poultney, Vermont, on January 23, 1801. He studied at Middlebury College (1817-1821). He was baptized into the Baptist faith in June 1822. He moved from Vermont to South Carolina after teaching for a year. In 1824, Mallary heeded the call to ministry and became a licensed minister. He settled in Columbia, South Carolina, and was officially ordained. On July 11, 1825, he married Susan Mary Evans. The couple had two surviving children, Charles and Rollin, but Mrs. Mallary died of consumption in 1834. In 1830, the Mallary family moved to Georgia. Rev. Mallary began pastoring churches throughout the state. He married Mrs. Mary E. Welch on December 1840. She died unexpectedly August 28, 1862. Rev. Mallary was also an author and a Mercer University Executive and Trustee. He preached for many years and passed away in 1864.
