Scope and Contents

The John R. Gunn Collection consists of mainly photocopies of Rev. Gunn’s life. This includes articles about and by him, book reviews, correspondence, sermons, and photographs. The majority of Rev. Gunn’s original works are located in the John R. Gunn Collection in The Burke Library Archives at Columbia University Union Theological Seminary in New York City, New York.

Biographical / Historical

Reverend John R. Gunn was born in Camak, Georgia, on August 2, 1877. He attended Mercer University and graduated in 1900. He married Nellie P. Higgins on June 26, 1902, and the couple had at least 3 children: Leonard, Dorothy, and Nell. Gunn graduated from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and pastored Baptist churches throughout Georgia, New York, Tennessee, and Indiana. He was popular with politicians and celebrities in the early- to mid-1900s until his death on November 15, 1956. After his death, his daughters continued to publish his devotions as well as the radio show he started.
