Scope and Contents

The Ivy Walker Duggan Papers contains four volumes covering the time period of 1828-1869: two volumes of printed Baptist Association minutes, one volume of printed letters from Duggan at battle fronts (1861-1865), and one journal by George R. Barker (1869). Mercer received the collection in 1992 through Furman B. Lewis from the estate of Mrs. Walter B. Hill, the daughter of Ivy W. Duggan. The collection was cataloged as part of the Georgia Archives and Manuscripts Automated Access Project: A Special Collections Gateway Program of the University Center in Georgia.

Biographical / Historical

Ivy W. Duggan, the son of Archelaus and Elizabeth Duggan, was born near Warthen in Washington County, Georgia, on December 22, 1831. He was an educator for most of his adult life, including serving as principal of the Washington Institute and Sandersville High School. He also served four years under General Robert E. Lee in Virginia. In 1876, he received an honorary Master of Arts degree from Mercer University.

In 1855, Duggan married Susan F. Reynolds, who died in 1869. In 1872 he married Sallie Cone. He was a member of the Washington Baptist Association and served as Clerk of the Association beginning in 1876.
