Biographical / Historical

Allen Beza Comish was a white man born in 1921 in Denham Springs, Louisiana, to Henry T. and Lucy Tucker Comish. He was one of twelve children born to pioneer Baptist preachers in Louisiana. Comish served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and also served in many capacities of Southern Baptist life. He was a member of the Sunday School Board (Lifeway) from 1967-1971, Superintendent of Intermediate Work and Training for the Baptist Sunday School Board from 1955-1959, and Director of the Church Services and Materials Division for the Sunday School Board. He served as an associate pastor at First Baptist Church Brunswick, Georgia, and First Baptist Church Jonesboro, Georgia. Comish was the organizing pastor at Waldrop Memorial Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia, for 12 years. He served as Vice President for Development at Brewton-Parker College before becoming Assistant to the President at Mercer University in 1977. Comish organized Mercer’s first golf team. He also served as an interim pastor while at Mercer University and Brewton-Parker College. His longest pastorate was at Musella Baptist Church in Musella, Georgia, from 1980 to 2003. Dr. Comish was married to his wife, Lucille, for 59 years, and the couple had one son, Craig. Comish died on April 26, 2011, at his home in Macon, Georgia.
