Scope and Contents

The Lansing Burrows papers contain two letters (1901 and 1913), an extensive record book of ministerial activities (1866-1882), and a scrapbook of mostly-undated news clippings.

Biographical / Historical

Lansing Burrows was born on April 10, 1843 in Philadelphia, PA. He was ordained as a minister in July 1867 in Stanford, KY. He served as a recording secretary for the Southern Baptist Convention from 1881-1913. He also served as the denominational statistician from 1881-1919. He was the President of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1914-1916. He was a Mercer University Trustee from 1890-1899 and then 1912-1919. Mr. Burrows died in October 17, 1919 in Americus, GA.

Mr. Burrows received a diploma from Wake Forest College in 1861. He received his AM degree from Princeton in 1871. He also received his DD from Madison (now Colgate University) in 1871. He received another DD from Bethel College in Russellville, KY in 1882. He latter received an LLD from Union University in TN in 1896.

Mr. Burrows had a lengthy career as a Baptist minister and pastor from 1867-1916. He served in churches in Stanford, KY (1867), Lexington, MO (1867-1869), Bordentown, NJ (1870-1876), Newark, NJ (1876-1879), Lexington, KY (1879-1883), and Americus, GA (1909-1916). He also served at the First Baptist Churches of Augusta, GA (1883-1899) and Nashville, TN (1899-1909). Mr. Burrows was also the editor of The Baptist Hymn and Praise Book and contributor of 6 original hymns in 1904.
