Biographical / Historical

Eugene W. Stetson was vice president and a member of the executive committee of the Guaranty Trust Company of New York. Born in Hawkinsville, Georgia, he went to school at both Gordon Military Institute and Mercer University. After completing his education, he had a career as a banker. Stetson was married and later remarried after his first wife’s death, having five children in total. He later extended his career in New York, where he was a director and member of many well-known companies, including the Coca-Cola Company and the Illinois Central Railroad Company. In 1927, he established a trust fund for the endowment of a chair of economics at Mercer University, and in 1930 he became a member of the University’s Endowment Commission. Three years later, Stetson was honored with the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws at Mercer’s annual commencement overseen by President Spright Dowell.
