Scope and Contents

The George S. Carpenter Collection contains brief biographical papers, including a magazine sketch of his life, a letter from the President of Mercer University, and a proclamation for a day in his honor. The collection also contains some court materials that he actively worked on, as well as Superior Court Judges of Georgia items.

Biographical / Historical

George Sherman Carpenter was a white man born in Coopers, Georgia on May 12, 1895. Following military service in France during World War II, Carpenter received a law degree from Mercer University in 1918. Carpenter then moved to Milledgeville, Georgia, where he began practicing law and married Inez Lord in 1920. Together, George and Inez had three children: Katherine, Martha, and George Jr., plus multiple grandchildren. Carpenter died on February 25, 1979, in Baldwin, Georgia.

Carpenter served as City Recorder of Milledgeville from 1924 to 1935 and as mayor of Milledgeville from 1936 to 1941. While mayor, Carpenter was also elected President of the Municipal Association of Georgia. He became Superior Court Judge of the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit on January 1, 1943, and held that office continuously until his retirement on January 1, 1974.
