Biographical / Historical

Albert Theodore Spalding was born on October 20, 1831. He graduated from Mercer in 1851 and from Mercer’s Theological Department in 1853. He received an Honorary Doctorate degree from Georgetown College in 1869. Spalding was an ordained Baptist minister and pastored churches throughout the southeast. He was a trustee of Mercer University from 1875 to 1881.

Spalding was featured in the September 20, 1919 issue of "The Orange and Black" alumni publication for his status as "Mercer's Oldest Living Graduate". The article describes his arrival at Mercer, his studies, and his subsequent career as a Baptist preacher.
