Biographical / Historical
Harry Vaughn Smith was born in Coweta County in 1903. He graduated from Locust Grove Institute and Mercer University, and Mercer gave him an honorary degree in 1958. He married Margie Patton in 1925; the couple had two sons.
Smith was ordained at Shadnor Baptist Church in Union City in 1922 and went on to serve 18 Georgia churches as pastor: Riverdale, The Rock, Sandy Creek, New Hope, Blairsville, Choestoe, Old Liberty, Ivy Log, Union, Penfield, Greensboro, Shiloh, Barnesville First, Forsyth First, Maynard, Haralson, Byron, and Yatesville. He was a U. S. Army Air Force Chaplain during World War II, a high school principal, and president of Blairsville Collegiate Institute. From 1946 to 1955, he was alumni secretary and assistant to the president at Mercer, then executive secretary of the Georgia Baptist Foundation from 1955 to 1970. He also served several terms on the Georgia Baptist Convention Executive Committee. He was chairman of trustees at Brewton-Parker College and a longtime leader in Boy Scout, Masonic, Exchange Club, and Lions Club work.
He retired in 1970 and died on June 3, 1996.
