Scope and Contents

The collection primarily consists of music and theatre programs collected by Lantz during her lifetime. These programs include Lantz’s performances and those that she attended at Indiana University, Tift College, and Mercer University. The programs were originally grouped by organization and date, and this order has been retained where possible. Some programs include handwritten notes on the front and/or back of the item. The collection also contains Lantz’s college degrees, “Lois Lantz Day” plaques, and other objects from Lantz’s teaching career at Tift College and Mercer University.

Biographical / Historical

Lois Belle Lantz was born in Union City, Indiana, on July 8, 1928, and died on March 16, 2019, in Macon, Georgia. Lantz earned a Master of Music in Piano Performance at Indiana University, Bloomington. She was very active in Sigma Alpha Iota, an international music fraternity, and Pi Kappa Lambda, the National Honor Society for Musicians.

Lantz taught at Tift College from 1950 to 1987 and at Mercer University from 1987 until 1996. She retired from Mercer in 1996 as an Associate Professor of Music Emerita. She was a beloved professor who was known for her abilities as both a teacher and performer. Tift Alumnae enjoyed her skill as an accompanist on trips to Europe, Carnegie Hall, and large and small hamlets around Georgia.

Lantz also served as an organist and pianist at Macon’s Woodland Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for several years. In addition, she served as an elder at First Christian (Disciples of Christ). She was a member of both the Forsyth Book Club and First Baptist Church Book Club.
