Biographical / Historical
David Bascom Nicholson was born in North Carolina February 17, 1887, and moved with his family to Georgia when he was a boy. Nicholson graduated with honors from Mercer University in 1910, returning in 1913 to receive his law degree. In 1912, he married Dixie Jay, a Wesleyan student he met while an undergraduate at Mercer. They had two daughters, Dixie Jay and Laurie; and a son, D. B. Jr. Called to the pastorate of the Jeffersonville church in 1921, Nicholson gave up practicing law and devoted himself to the ministry for the remainder of his life. While serving the Jeffersonville church, Nicholson was also dean at Brewton-Parker Junior College. Nicholson made his reputation as a pioneer in Baptist Student Union work. Affectionately known as “Brother Nick” by his students, he would refer to them as his “chillun.” He served the Georgia Baptist Convention as Baptist Student Union secretary for 26 years, concentrating in his early administration on the University of Georgia. His students surprised him with a twenty-fifth anniversary party at the Georgia Baptist Convention in 1950. Nicholson’s greatest joy came from counseling students individually. In 1949, Mercer University honored Nicholson with the doctor of divinity degree. Nicholson retired from the Georgia Baptist Convention in 1951 and died January 15, 1962.
