This eye- type socketed form of battle axe developed in the Near East at the start of the Late Bronze Age when war chariots became more common. In Egypt the ax was similar but lacked the socket, perhaps because it was cheaper to make (though less durable) or because they rejected innovative forms. (2000 1500 BC) Part of Lovelace Collection.
