Scientific Inquiry Databases

Academic Search Complete
This multi-disciplinary database includes more than 6,100 full-text periodicals (over 5,100 of which are peer-reviewed), and also offers indexing and abstracts for monographs, reports, conference proceedings, etc. The database is updated daily and features PDF going back as far as 1887 with the majority of full-text titles in searchable PDF format.

Research Library — Provides abstracts and indexing for over 2,600, as well as full text for over 1,700 scholarly journals and general magazines. Research Library is an expansion of, and replacement for, the database titled Periodical Abstracts Research II.

ScienceDirect
Elsevier's ScienceDirect Web Editions provides access to the current twelve months of articles from about 200 journals in the physical and biological sciences (including some computer science titles). The issues are available on a rolling basis, so when the March 2010 issue is posted, the March 2009 issue is removed.

Web of Science (Web of Knowledge) — Provides detailed citations and abstracts for the top scholarly periodicals in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities. Includes the Science Citation Index, the Social Sciences Citation Index, and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index. Covers both domestic and international journals, open access resources, books, patents, proceedings, and Web sites.

Science & Technology Collection
Contains over 800 full-text journals covering relevant aspects of the scientific and technical community. Topics include aeronautics, astrophysics, biology, chemistry, computer technology, geology, aviation, physics, archaeology, marine sciences, and materials science. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for more than 1,700 publications. This collection contains many scholarly journals.

TOPICsearch
A current events database that offers many full text articles covering social, political, and economic issues, scientific discoveries, and other topics.

CQ Researcher
The CQ Researcher provides a weekly report containing comprehensive reporting and analysis on issues shaping our world. This database contains full text of issues from 1996-present. For current or back issues in print, ask at the Reference Desk.

LexisNexis Academic
Full text news (newspapers), business, legal, medical, and reference information.

JSTOR
This database provides access to complete back files of core journals in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. The Tarver Library subscribes to the Arts & Sciences I, II, and III and also Health & General Sciences.

JSTOR's agreement with publishers include an updating provision referred to as a "moving wall," which is a fixed period of time ranging, in most cases, from 2 to 5 years, that defines the gap between the most recently published issue of any journal and the date of the most recent issue available in JSTOR. This database will begin to include some current content in 2011. The Tarver Library is not yet subscribing to this current content. Tarver librarians created this guide to help students using this database.

MEDLINE (EBSCO) — Provides access to National Library of Medicine's database, as well as links to some full-text articles.

PsycARTICLES (EBSCO) — Definitive source of searchable full text articles on current issues in psychology.
