Biographical / Historical
Capricorn Records was an independent record label founded by Phil Walden and Frank Fenter in 1969 in Macon, Georgia. Between the years of 1969 and 1979, Capricorn produced nine platinum albums, seventeen gold albums, and five gold singles. Notable artists from the early years of Capricorn Studios include the Allman Brothers Band, The Marshall Tucker Band, Wet Willie, Percy Sledge, and more. Following a decline in the 1980s, the label was revitalized in the 1990s with artists such as Cake, Widespread Panic, 311, and Kenny Chesney. Capricorn was sold in 2000 to Volcano Records. In 2010, the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation placed the Capricorn recording studio on its "Places in Peril" list. A few years later, in 2015, the recording studio was preserved through a partnership between Mercer University and several groups, including NewTown Macon. This partnership led to the creation of "Mercer Music at Capricorn", which includes recording studios, performance venues, lofts, and a museum on the rich history of music in Macon.
