Biographical / Historical

Ruth Haldrum (1853-1928), who remained a teacher in Selma for most of her life, must have had a remarkable life story: Census records show that she was an African-American woman born in Calcutta, India to French parents. She first came to Selma from Florida as a “missionary” teacher at what was originally called the Alabama Baptist Colored University, somewhat unique among historically Black Bible colleges because it was also open to elementary school students – the “little ones’ for whom Ruth Haldrum felt such compassion.
