Biographical / Historical
George Carpenter studied civil engineering at Union College in New York and received a Bachelor of Divinity from Colgate Rochester in 1925. Dr. Carpenter was appointed a missionary of the ABFMS in 1925, with designation to Kimpese, Congo, now Zaire. During an extended furlough he studied in the Department of Race Relations at Yal, receiving the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1937.
In July 1937 he married Isabel Frances West, and together they served in the Congo until 1938 when he was released to serve as educational advisor for the Congo Protestant Council. Their service in Congo continued until their final return in 1953. Dr. Carpenter was awarded the medal of the "Chevalier de l'Ordre de Leopold II" in January 1954. Dr. Carpenter also had service with the International Missionary Council as Secretary.
