Biographical / Historical

Carolyn was born in Delaware, Ohio in August 1913. She graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1935, and she graduated from the Baptist Missionary Training School in Chicago the following year. Upon graduation, Carolyn taught religious education in public school in Delaware before her appointment by the Woman's American Baptist Foreign Mission Society to serve on the mission field in Assam, India in 1938.

Carolyn served at the Sarah E. White Memorial Hostel for Girls which provided a Christian home for girls attending Cotton College (government), at Gauhati. She assumed many responsibilities there such as conducting evening prayers, pageants and religious education activities, thus doing much to build up the a Christian womanhood in Assam. One highlight of Carolyn's ministry occurred when she had occasion to sit in on a meeting around a campfire with Mahatma Gandhi. When World War II interrupted her mission service, Carolyn worked in a canteen serving British and American soldiers. She returned to the United States in 1944 on a troop ship across the Pacific carrying Americans home while protected by a destroyer against enemy submarines.

Once back in the States, Carolyn began a long and fulfilling career teaching in public schools. In addition, she served with the United Church of Christ for several summers traveling from church to church in southern Ohio to assist with vacation Bible School. She loved to travel and made several trips around the world in her retirement years.
