Biographical / Historical

From Brown Alumnae News Letter, November 1949:

Ann Canada Swain (1911 graduate) has been elected the first woman trustee of Brown. No alumna could be more deserving of the honor. The citation which was read when she was given an honorary degree by Brown in 1945 is especially appropriate now: "For the vigor of your alumnae leadership, for the energy you have poured in to improving the residential character of Pembroke College, for the Christian faith and courage that made you a recognized leader in foreign missions, for the sanity and equable spirit which helps you bear heavy official responsibilities in a great denomination, for your achievements and your grace, we delight to honor you."

Swain held positions on the Central Committee and the Executive Committee of the World Council of Churches and was president of the Northern Baptist Convention in the 1940s.

Extent

Immediate Source of Acquisition

No paperwork for how the materials got here, but we have a copy of her will, which states her papers should come here. Final paperwork said that there was nothing, but we do have papers, so they made their way here. We hope to find paperwork in the future with details.

General

The collection also has documents for Leslie E. Swain, Anna's husband.
