Biographical / Historical
From New York Times, 10 September 1932 Carl W. Petty was born in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Dr. Alonzo M. Petty. He graduated from Occidental College in 1906 and from Rochester Theological Seminary in 1909. He was ordained in the Baptist ministry that same year and became pastor of the First Baptist Church, New Brighton, NY. He married Eloise Wells in 1910 and they had two daughters, Barbara and Jessie. Dr. Petty was pastor of the Creston Avenue Baptist Church in New York from 1910 to 1920 and won wide recognition for his services there. He went to the Mount Morris Church here in 1920, remaining there for two years. Then he became pastor of the First Baptist Church in Pittsburgh, where he remained. Petty received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Occidental in 1920 and from Denison College in 1923. In 1926, the University of Pittsburgh conferred upon him the degree of LL. D. He was a member of the board of directors of the American Baptist Home Mission Society, of the Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce, and the Masonic order. He served as university preacher at institutions such as Cornell, University of Chicago and the University of Illinois.
