Biographical / Historical

From the time of appointment in 1939 to the end of overseas service in January 1967, Leonard and Margaret Hall Crain were related to the work in Burma as communicators in print, radio and audiovisual media. Leonard Crain served intitially as the director of publishing for the Baptist Mission Press in Rangoon, a ministry interrupted in 1942, as World War II came to Burma; for three years then during the war, the Crains lived in India, a period during which publication with a Burma focus continued.

Leonard's postwar experience was again in Burma, as he returned in 1947. In 1953 he transferred his location and ministry to Mandalay, where he became the Director of Audiovisual Aids under the sponsorship of the Burma Christian Council. As part of the outreach which developed, tapes for the Southeast Asia Radio Project located in the Philippines were produced at the Center. During a period of residence in the U.S., 1958-1959, and then in a post-1966 period, when he was unable to serve in Burma, Leonard Crain worked in communications with the audiovisual ministry of the Division of Foreign Missions of the National Council of the Chuches of Christ. For a period of about eighteen months, Leonard and Margaret lived in Bangkok, while they helped to develop radio programming for Burma. The Crains retired in 1972 and settled in New York City.
