Biographical / Historical
William R. Manley was born in Pennsylvania in 1850. He father and grandfather were ministers before him. We went to William Jewel College in Liberty, Missouri and graduated in 1879. That same year he became a missionary and sailed for Burma. Alice was born in Bethel, Maine and received her education in the schools of Augusta, Kansas. Once in Burma, William and Alice were stationed in Ongole in charge of the high school. Their second term was in Udayagiri. After being stationed for a short time in Kurnool, they stopped at the Vepery Baptist Church of Madras. In 1912, after a furlough, they returned to Madras, but left in 1916 due to William’s sickness. Their son Charles worked at the Clough Memorial Hospital in Ongole, and another son, Rev. F.P. Manley, also went to serve in India. William was the editor of the Baptist Missionary Review for many years.
