Biographical / Historical
Alice Jorgenson was born in the Artichoke Lake farming community in Minnesota. After graduating from Bethel Academy in St. Paul, she went to the University of Minnesota Training School, finishing the course in nurse’s training. Then she completed two years of missionary and theological training at Northern Baptist Seminary in Chicago. Alice sailed for Europe in 1928, studying tropical diseases in London and French in Belgium. Her work in Africa began late in 1928, at the Vanga, Moanza, Kikongo and Boko mission stations. At Boko she was in charge of the hospital work during the last five years she served. Alice was evacuated in July 1960 during the Congo revolt and returned to the United States. In 1957 she received La Medaille d’Or de l’Ordre Royal du Lion, an award from the King of Belgium in recognition of her years of service in the Congo.
