Biographical / Historical

Born in Spokane, Washington, Robert Torbet received his early schooling in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is a graduate of Wheaton College, Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary and the University of Pennsylvania. He served as instructor of history at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary and then as professor of church history. From 1951 to 1955 he was editor of University Lesson publications and associate editor of Baptist Leader with the American Baptist Board of Education and Publications. From 1955 to 1958 he was director of the department of education services in the Board of Education. In 1958 he served as dean and professor of church history at Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City. In 1967 he became assistant general secretary for ecumenical relations of the American Baptist Churches USA. He is the writer of A History of the Baptists, Venture of Faith: The Story of American Baptist Foreign Missions 1814-1954, The Protestant Reformation, and Ecumenism: Free Church Dilemma.
