Biographical / Historical
Milton Evans was born in 1862, the son of an Ebensburg, Pennsylvania farmer. At the age of sixteen, he entered the University of Lewisburg (now Bucknell), where he graduated twice, the second time in 1882 with a master's degree in classical studies. From 1883 to 1887 he taught and served as principal at Keystone Acadeory, West Huntington, Pennsylvania.
Evans graduated from Crozer Theological Seminary in 1890 and immediately joined the faculty as Professor of Biblical Exegesis. He successively taught comparative religion, theology, and church history and in 1905, became the first Dean of the Faculty. From his inauguration as President in 1909 to his retirement in 1934, Evans guided the Seminary through the reorganization of its curriculum and recruitment of faculty.
During hls career, Evans was a popular speaker and preacher, as well as a prolific and sometimes controversial writer who authored six books and an abundance of articles for Baptist periodicals.
