Biographical / Historical
Josephine Wilmarth of New York was appointed as a home missionary among freed people in New Bern, North Carolina. There she met Edward Doran Mason, another home missionary from Vermont. They married and returned to New England where they had one daughter (original collection donor Ruth Gates). There Rev. Mason served a number of churches, traveling often and leaving Mrs. Mason and their daughter with his parents in Vermont. Concerned about her daughter’s future education, Mrs. Mason prayed for guidance and then wrote to her husband that they were moving to the Boston area. There Mrs. Mason found work with the New England Sunday School Union and its Chinese Mission.
