Biographical / Historical

Rev. William Edwin Darrow was born on September 2, 1864 in New York City. After he was baptized at East Baptist Church in New York City, he felt the call to enter into the work of the ministry. He received his license to preach from the First Baptist Church of Brooklyn by Dr. D. C. Eddy, the pastor in 1889. He was ordained a minister by the First Baptist Church of Fort Plain in New York in 1892. In 1892, Rev. Darrow married Harriet Alice Mills and they had three children Chester, Grace, and Roger. He received his education from Nebraska State in Peru, Nebraska where he obtained a Bachelor’s of Education degree. In 1899, he and his family moved to Hamilton, New York where he attended Colgate University and received his Bachelor’s of Arts degree in 1903. He later attended Colgate-Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, New York where he received his Bachelor of Divinity degree.

During his studies, Rev. Darrow was pastor of Deruyter Baptist Church and the Baptist Church at Durhamville, New York. He and his family later relocated to St. Louis, Missouri where he became a member of the Ministers and Missionaries Benefit Board of the Northern Baptist Convention and a member of the Relief and Annuity Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.
