Biographical / Historical

Baptist missionary. American Baptist Foreign Mission Society missionary in China, 1919-1948; in Japan, 1948-1951.

Biographical / Historical

Gertrude was appointed by the WABFMS in February 1919 with designation to Hangchow, East China. She sailed in 1919 and took up duties teaching at the Union Girls’ School at Hangchow where her training in music, mathematics, philosophy and in school administration were put to good use. In 1937 the Japanese took over Hangchow compelling her to move to Shanghai where she cared for sick children in refugee camps, said to number around 1100 children and 100 mothers with babies. In 1939 the Union Girls’ School carried on in Shanghai and also in Shaohsing as part of the Christian Cooperative School, the latter being the united effort of several denominations to maintain their missionary work during wartime. When Gertrude returned from furlough in 1939 she was stationed in Shaohsing where duties included those related to the school and to care of refugees. When the Japanese entered Shaohsing she was interned in Shanghai, but after a short time was repatriated on an Italian liner to East Africa and then onwards to the U.S. in 1942.

After the war, Gertrude returned to China, sailing in 1946. After less than two years, she was forced to leave in 1948, due to the arrival of the Communist government, and she proceeded to Japan where she worked at the girls’ school in Sendai until her retirement in 1951.
