Biographical / Historical

Ruth M. Carr was appointed a missionary of the Woman's American Baptist Foreign Missionary Society in 1923, with designation to El Salvador. She was designated to Colegio Bautista in Santa Ana. In 1926, she became principal of the school and continued in that capacity until her retirement in 1961. The school advanced under her leadership. A high school department was organized in 1931 and soon the whole school was fully accredited by the Salvadoran government. In 1967 when the Ruth M. Carr building was dedicated in her honor, the principal speaker was the Vice President of El Salvador, an alumnus of Colegio Bautista de Santa Ana. In 1961 just before her return to the U.S., the government of El Salvador gave her their highest honor, the Order of Jose Mateas Delgado.

Born in Wilton, New York, Ruth Carr received her high school education in Saratoga Springs, and took one year of teacher training in Ticonderoga, both in New York. She taught for two years in a rural school before attending the Baptist Missionary Training School in Chicago. She earned her BA degree at Denison University in Ohio.
