Ryland, John Papers
Scope and Contents
Correspondence, 1774-1832, includes letters to and from Daniel Sutcliff and Samuel Pearce.
Letter from Olinthus Gregory dated 16 July 1832. It is written to John Ryland Jr.’s son, Jonathan Edwards Ryland. Gregory was preparing a biography of Robert Hall Jr., and he wrote to Ryland soliciting information about Hall’s early intellectual development.
Handwritten book of "Remarks on books and authors extracted from his contemplations together with a few observations by other writers." No date. Possibly a compilation drawn from the work of John Collett Ryland (1723-1792), the father of John Ryland Jr. (1753-1825). In particular, it is taken from his Contemplations, a three-volume series that covered a wide range of theological topics. Author of this book is unknown, handwriting is not similar to Ryland Sr. or Ryland Jr.
Letter from Enoch Rector to “Bro. Ryland” dated 1 February 1844: Rector was a Baptist minister who lived from 1804 to 1898. The Ryland to whom he wrote was possibly Robert Ryland (1805-1899), the pastor of the First African Baptist Church of Richmond and president of Richmond College.
