Scope and Contents

Financial and business files and ledgers; correspondence; legal documents; property records; minutes; annual reports; organizational histories and publications; planning documents; conference and event materials; membership and participant lists; staff and personnel materials; curricula; surveys; blueprints; photographs; ephemera; and other materials documenting the churches, centers, camps, and other ministries associated with the New York City Baptist Society. Among the entities represented are the Metropolitan Baptist Camps, Inc.; Long Island Baptist Housing Development Fund Company, Inc.; Women’s Baptist Mission Society of Long Island; Old Oak Farm (Baptist Fresh Air Home Society); Baptist Church Extension Society of Brooklyn and Queens; Negro Auxiliary; Colgate Rochester Divinity School and Crozer Theological Seminary. Also represented are Mariners’ Temple, Judson Memorial Church, and numerous other churches and community centers with ministries to a wide variety of ethnic and urban populations, e.g.,Hispanic, Swedish, Chinese, Italian, Hungarian, Latvian peoples. Biographical / Historical

Organized as the Missionary Union in 1870, with antecedent organizations in 1806 and 1841; changed to the Baptist City Mission in 1875; incorporated as the New York City Baptist Mission Society, 1893; name changed to the New York Baptist City Society, 1938.

From Library of Congress: The American Baptist Churches of Metropolitan New York traces its origins to 1791 when the New York Baptist Association was formed. The Long Island Baptist Association was formed in 1867 and the New York Baptist City Society was born in 1893. These witnessing streams merged in 1972 as the ABC of Metropolitan New York.
