Biographical / Historical

The Bible School, or Sunday school, had its beginnings in 1815 with teachings from the Bible to the young members of the parish. Known as the Sabbath School Society, the organization at one time operated five separate schools which were consolidated when the Church moved to Broad and Arch Streets in 1856. The organization was again reorganized in October 1889. In 1926, it became the Department of Religious Education, which later assumed the name Board of Christian Education. It now supervises all educational activities of the Church.
