 File — Box: 10, Folder: 12

Scope and Contents

Two Spurgeon letters. The first does not have a year date and refers to his great sorrow. “Why should we not suffer. We must be like our Head.” The other letter, dated 1887, deals with U. S. – British tension and stresses diplomacy rather than fighting. He doesn’t feel important enough to write to the President; Missions to the Crow Indians. This letter, signed by W. A. Petzolt, is on letterhead of Crow Indian Baptist Missions “maintained by The American Baptist Home Mission Society”. It is primarily about meeting Will James, the noted cowboy author and artist but also refers to John Frost; John Frost was the son of an Army surgeon and a Pigean Indian woman. His father was killed by Iroquois when John was 7 months old, after which he and his mother lived with the Crow tribe. He went to Carlisle Indian School and later became a Baptist minister and a missionary for the Baptist Mission Society at Pryor, Montana. He was the interpreter when Chief Plenty Coups spoke at the dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. These letters are all to E. E. Snook, who dealt in art and other treasures of the West. Some are also signed with his Indian name, Plenty Crows or Many Crows. Some of these letters are of great interest, dealing with the perfidy of white men and the differences between white men and Indians regarding their philosophy of life; Alvah Sabin Hobart was a pastor in New York and Ohio and a professor at Crozer Seminary. He was a trustee of Denison and American Baptist Education Society, a board member of American Baptist Home Missionary Society, author of many books, and much more. There are three letters from Hobart to his wife (two before their marriage), one letter to him from a relative and 14 letters from Hobart’s wife to various family members. Collectively, her letters give insight into the life of a late 19th century pastor’s wife; This letter is by Charles E. Fuller, a Baptist minister and evangelist who later was the radio host of The Old Fashioned Revival Hour.
