The Atlanta Baptist College was founded in 1964. On October 18, 1950, at a meeting of the Atlanta Baptist Association, a motion was made that a committee be appointed to study the advisability and the possibility of establishing a Baptist college in Atlanta. The motion passed and a committee of four members was formed: E.G. Kilpatrick, Paul S. James, Dick H. Hall and Monroe F. Swilley, Jr. In 1968, Dr. Swilley became president of the Atlanta Baptist College and in 1972, ABC merged with Mercer University. The merger created Mercer University in Atlanta. Dr. Swilley was named Vice President of Mercer University Atlanta until his retirement in 1989. The Monroe F. Swilley, Jr. Library, at Mercer University Atlanta, was dedicated in Dr. Swilley’s honor on October 12, 1983.
