Biographical / Historical

Oren Huling Baker was born in 1894 the son of a farmer and Division Supervisor for the C&O Railroad. In the fall of 1913, he entered Denison University where he graduated with a degree in humanities.

Baker enrolled in the Rochester Theological Seminary in the fall of 1919. He began his work as Pastor at Portageville, New York in 1920-1922. On June 4, 1922, he accepted a pastorate position at First Baptist Church of Morgantown in West Virginia. He was Pastor of Parsall's Baptist Church in Rochester, New York from 1928-1935. Dr. Baker joined the staff of Colgate Rochester Divinity School in 1935 as Professor of Applied Christianity and Pastoral Counseling. He assumed the position of Dean of Colgate Rochester Divinity School in 1945.

Baker throughout his pastoral career believed and taught that the church and ministry with social action were the lifeline to Christianity.

Dr. Baker was a committed a Christian, an avid supporter of mental health, education, community and civic committees. He was interested in psychology and sociology and developed applications for Christian living. Dr. Baker authored two books, wrote numerous articles, sermons, and manuscripts on theology, pastoral psychology, ministerial education, religion and education.
