Biographical / Historical

Sylvester Burnham was born in Exeter, New Hampshire and died in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1862. He attended the Newton Theological Institute and was ordained in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He was pastor at Amherst, Massachuetts and served as a teacher in Worcester, Massachusetts. He became professor of Semitic languages and Old Testament Exegisis at Madison University Theological Seminary in 1875, continuing in that post until 1918. He served as Dean of the Colgate Theological School, formerly Madison University, from 1893 until 1910. Bowdoin College awarded him the D.D. in 1885, and Colgate University awarded him the S.T.D. in 1918.
