Biographical / Historical

Rev. Addison Strong Truxton, former missionary to India and Thailand, was born October 1, 1918, the 3rd of 6 children, in Upper Montclair, New Jersey. He married Ouida Haskins in 1945 and a second wife, Hazel Hall, in 1981.

Addison served in the Army Medical Department in Antigua, British West Indies, setting up and running the supply hospital, editing the base newspaper and assisting the base chaplain. Addison attended Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary where he received his BA and Bachelor of Theology degrees. He was ordained as a minister in 1950 by the Philadelphia Association of the American Baptist Churches. Rev. Truxton was then commissioned to serve as a Missionary in northeast India among the Naga tribe from 1951 to 1954. He was on the faculty of the Assam Baptist Theological Seminary in Jorhat, India. During 1952-1953, he dealt with the explosive "Heresy Trial" in the Ao Naga Churches and mediated a positive outcome. Due to the Naga unrest the government of India revoked missionary visas, causing him and others to be deported from India in 1954. Rev. Truxton was commissioned to Thailand (1954-1957)where he opened the first Hill Station in NW Thailand as a model for developing missions to the Karen People for the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society.

After returning to the United States, he received his Master of Arts Degree in Cultural Anthropology and Far East Studies from Cornell University,followed by a 5-year term as Baptist Chaplain at UCLA. He then was awarded a Danforth Scholarship to Yale Divinity School where he received his Master of Sacred Theology Degree. He then iserved as Statewide Director of Higher Education Ministries for New Jersey with the American Baptist Campus Ministries for 7 years. After his move to California, Rev. Truxton became program planner and coordinator for the Catholic Charities of Fresno's Refugee Resettlement of South East Asian refugees for Central California. He was also supervisor of the World Relief organization to assist with refugee settlement. Along with Addison's many accomplishments, he was a poet. His poems were published in 2000, Through the Less Dark Glass.
