Biographical / Historical

Samuel Southard received a BA from George Washington University in 1948, a BD from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1951 and a Master of Government Administration from Georgia State University in 1974.

He has been a pastor in Kentucky, Savannah and California. He was visiting professor at Vanderbilt in the late 1960s, and Hong Kong Baptist Seminary in 1983 and 2000. He was professor of Pastoral counseling, Vanguard University, Costa Mesa, California and Graduate professor of Psychology and Spiritual Director there from 1999-2003. He served as Spiritual Director of First Presbyterian in Naples, Florida and then at Naples Community Church from 2004 to 2008.

He is the author of Death and Dying, a Bibliographic Survey, 1991; Pastoral Administration, 1986; Ethics for Executives, 1976; Comprehensive Pastoral Care, 1975 and The Family and Mental Illness, 1957, as well as many more.
